I’m sure everyone is feeling a bit bored right now. Hopefully, we’re all doing our civic duty by staying home and not socializing, but that does make for some pretty monotonous times. “Bored,” by Alone Zone, while not actually about being quarantined or bored at home, seems to encompass how we’re all feeling right about now. “Bored” is the story of a broken relationship, hanging on by a lost memory; it mirrors the despairing dullness many of us are feeling during these unprecedented times.
While the narrative is quite depressing, the vibe is upbeat and chill- like it should be on the soundtrack for a cute little indie romance. When I first listened to the song, I was chilling upside down on the couch, staring up at the ceiling fan, making up a little movie in my mind as the lyrics spilled out. The song tells a distinctive love story, images of wasting time in the sunshine, sprawling on a dock in the middle of summer with your lover, swirls in your mind as you listen along to Alone Zone’s lyrics. It’s a great little pick-me-up for today’s time, a chance to escape to another world- even if it’s just for 3 minutes. It’s a simple song, with pretty little wordplay and a happy melody singing about wistful times.
The lyrics lament, “I feel bored wasting all your time.” On its own, this is a lovely song, but I personally adore how it can be a metaphor for this catastrophe we’re living through right now. It’s almost as if a personified Corona virus is singing the lyrics to us. Or maybe that’s just wishful thinking on my part; if COVID-19 was feeling bored wasting all of our time, maybe it would leave us alone, like the narrator in the song is hinting at.
I’m a sucker for a feel-good guitar riff, and a soft sultry voice, and this song has both- what more can an ex-scene girl ask for in 2020? It’s that kind of song you can either cuddle up in your PJs with, or play as background music for your Instagramable garden picnic (after stay-at-home orders end, of course). “Bored” is simple and sweet, with enough depth to keep your mind busy for a few minutes. We all need a little distraction right now, so why not revel in the feel-good vibes and give Alone Zone’s “Bored” a play.
