Back in the day, rap and hip-hop were never my music genre of choice. I didn’t want to hear about guns, drugs, and banging women, nor did I relate to the dangerous lifestyle most rappers glamorized. However, once I discovered some hip hop artists rap about positivity, I was pleasantly surprised. In any music genre, I prefer to listen to be positively inspired in life, because what you surround yourself with- your company, the music you listen to, the people you follow on Instagram, the food you consume- becomes a part of you. So personally, I choose to consume positivity, and adore artists that strive to put out meaningful, inspirational messages to their audience.
Shawn Mocey is one of these artists. His song, “Meant to Be,” is a positive call-to-action anthem about bettering yourself and the world around you. It’s a great message for all of us struggling with the hardships brought on by the uncertainty we’re experiencing in our lives right now. Mocey’s vibrant energy is contagious, empowering you to be who you’re truly *meant to be.*
“Pull the mask off, see what it’s like to breath, so we can finally realize what we’re meant to be”
Not only is this song a beautiful anthem of hope, it has a chill yet cheerful beat perfect for blasting in your car as you’re driving to work, or jamming with your friends (once the safer-at-home orders are lifted, of course). It’s important, perhaps now more than ever, to consciously choose media that uplifts oneself. We have enough negativity in the real world right now, why subject yourself to such in your escapism?
Mocey’s music really seems to value human life over anything else. I believe his message, infused with optimistic charm, strives to showcase the love, happiness, and philanthropic nature we are all capable of practicing. What I really love about this song is the willingness to preach about motivation and positivity with a hip-hop vibe. There’s not a plethora of hip-hop artists with this message, so I’m happy to see artists like Shawn Mocey paving the way.
“Never following the crowd never been assimilated”
As much as we’d like to believe, music alone can’t change the world; only people can change the world. But when amazing artists like Shawn Mocey create songs like this, it aids in inspiring others to incite such positive change that is needed in the world, especially during these uncertain times. I know it’s cliche to say, but changing yourself really does help to change the world. If you’re uncertain how to begin embracing positivity in your life, or if you’re ready to dive in headfirst, give Shawn Mocey’s “Meant to Be” a listen, and chill out with his old-school hip-hop vibes.
