Unless you’re dating Pinocchio or Jim Carrey in the 1990s, having a relationship with a liar can be an infuriating time.

It’s a bit like dealing with a salesperson; you know something isn’t quite right but their words are so sweet and persuasive you end up believing them.

For many people, words are just a means of getting what you want, but you’ll eventually hurt those you mislead.

In her latest release, “Words”, Taylor Noelle sketches a story of a romantic relationship ruined by deceitful words.

It’s hard to describe this song without using the word groovy. Listen to it and you’ll see what I mean.

It’s so groovy, baby.

The smooth blend of Pop and R&B textures in the song complement her casual, honeyed vocals.

You told me that you loved me

You told me that you needed me

You told me there was nothing in the world

that you wanted more

What’d you say that for?

Noelle’s lyrics in “Words” are pretty unambiguous; the person she dated wasn’t exactly a paragon of truth. When someone tells you that they love and want you, it’s nice to believe it. But do they really mean all the grand things they say?

You’ve got a funny way of saying what you mean when you tell me

I’m the best you ever had, then you take it back.

You’re not gonna ever give a second thought to a remark

after you let it out, after it leaves your mouth.

It’s not like this person is going around ensnaring girls with an array of deceitful phrases he devised while twirling his handlebar mustache. Rather, he’s frivolous about the things he says and doesn’t appreciate the weight of his words.

The poppy, hypnotic bass and drums kick in after the first verse, adding a nice groove to the song.

Words mean something

Words mean something

Words mean something

Words mean something

At this point, she’s basically taking a hammer and chisel and trying to knock these words into her obtuse partner’s head. Hey, dummy, words mean something.

You said that it was easy

You said you wouldn’t leave me

You said so many lovely little lies,

you almost believed they’re true

I can almost believe you

Can someone really promise that they’ll never leave you? Who knows how you’ll feel in the future?

When people lie to us, especially in relationships, we can usually sense that something’s off. But we can also choose to ignore those feelings and deceive ourselves into believing them. Noelle is chiding herself as much as her romantic partner in this song; yes, you said lovely little lies, but why did I believe you?

Baby it’s like a white noise, you got it coming out of your mouth

And now I listen for a minute but I figured you out

Everything you say means nothing

And thank god talk is cheap,

You ain’t spent too much on me

And baby I finally see, you mean nothing

The pace of her vocals picks up after the second chorus in what is the catchiest part of the song. She finally sees through his false words and realizes that if his words mean nothing, he means nothing too.

“Words” is a funky admonishment for liars; if you don’t mean it, don’t say it.
