Embodying a bedroom indie pop sound similar to Clairo and Girl in Red, Kinnie Starr lets you know she’s “Right Here With You” on her latest single. Kicking off the start of summer, she offers the perfect track to play in the background while you lay in the grass and look up at the sky.

The song itself simply sounds heavenly. Layers of instruments stack upon one another starting with the strum of a guitar and her own vocalization. Building with the high hats on percussion, the song progresses with slow electronic beats that’s mesmerizingly looped throughout the entirety of the song. The main instruments to hear are the keys, electric guitar, bass and some synths. To add variety, small tad-bits of different instruments are inserted into the verses to break up the main melody. It seems like once she settled on making the sound official, she allowed herself to creatively explore other chimes and effects to elevate the song. Thus the song becomes texturized which can stimulate the listener, keeping them more engaged.

Lyrically, the words she sings are reassuring. And that is a calming thing to experience. What makes this an easy to listen to song is that there is no tension or conflict between her and the person she is singing about. The energy between their relationship is parallel to the other. Whoever it may be, romantic or platonic, it is simple; she is always there for them and they are always there for her. I feel like this is a rarity in itself because most songs center around either wanting someone or pushing someone away.

“It don’t matter what you say or do, I’m always right there with you”

“You’re always right here with me too.”

Vocally, she tends to draw out the length of certain words such as “round”, “you” and “always” when she sings the line “birds fly round and you let me know you’re always right there with me too” during the second verse. I believe this detail along with the harmonies perfectly mimics the slow hot summer days where time feels like it is dragging. However, there is not a care in mind that it feels that way because contentment overrules that feeling. Contentment in herself, the other person and ultimately fulfillment in what they have together. Singing along to this can be comparable to a mantra. With its tempo and the repetitiveness of the chorus, you can almost manifest the words to apply to your life.

Kinnie Starr offers cathartic lyrics, relaxed synth beats and a vibe that’s perfect to add to any playlist.
