You know that satisfaction you get when eating chocolate-covered pretzels? That’s the feeling you experience when listening to OCNSIDE’s “Taking Me Over,” because it’s the perfect blend of salty and sweet. A retro edge radiates at the core, with a distinctly modern feel breathing a unique life into this song. We don’t have enough happy songs in this world. “Taking Me Over” speaks of a pure, simple hope that a relationship will last forever. This upbeat optimism is rare nowadays, so it was a breath of fresh air to experience such a distinctive outlook on life. I can’t get enough of this song, and neither will you, after you experience its joyful take on love.

Making me want to sing along the first time I listened, this song cultivates both sparkling originality and a catchy tune. It’s light and fresh- the melody, lyrics, and beat fuse together so effortlessly, creating a beautiful listening experience. Undeniably of high calibre, it’ll be on repeat on everyone’s playlist. The youthful lyrics read:

I just wanna laugh and never have to cry

While it may seem juvenile to think in such a way, simple optimism possesses a poetic ambience. It’s natural to wish for good things in life, and childlike wonderment of a classic theme- love- gives the rest of us hope for a better, lovelier, life.

“Taking Me Over” is calm and laid back- yet upbeat at the same time. It’s like a cool wave washing over my psyche. The soulful sound made me feel like I stepped out of a time machine into the late 1970’s. It’s The Monkees meets Arctic Monkeys- a perfect alliterative combination I never knew I craved until I listened to this song. The great thing about soulful 1970s pop music is the popularity of simple happiness. “Taking Me Over” infuses this old-school happy vibe with a unique contemporary sound. Optimistically wonderful, you can’t help but dance or bop to the beat. I love how subtly commanding his voice is, while the beat is a bit whimsical and bubbly.

It’s a splash of sunshine in our modern topsy-turvy world. It’s simple devotion and adoration.

“When I’m with you the universe can wait”

We need more joyful songs like “Taking Me Over.” When I first listened to it, I felt a familiar vibe, which confused me because OCNSIDE’s sound is so unique. I finally realized why I felt this comforting sensation when listening to this song: it radiates a delightfully gritty David/Shaun Cassidy vibe. When I was a kid, I picked out a Shaun Cassidy album- my first vinyl record- at a thrift store because I thought his face was pretty. I listened to this album repeatedly for years, and I still do to this day! Hearing the positive vibes in “Taking Me Over” will make anyone celebrate its retro aesthetic.

At one point, the singer hints at a slight sorrow, saying, “If there’s no forever the tears start rolling in.” Sweetness overcomes the salty flavour when he goes on to reiterate his steadfast conviction in their relationship. I love music with a joyful vibe because there’s already enough sadness in the world.

This song brings us an optimistic view of love- an unfaltering faith that would make even Voldemort believe in a fairytale happy ending.

If you’re feeling a bit down about love, a failed relationship, or your current relationship, soaking up some of OCNSIDE’s positive vibes will surely lift your spirits. Today’s world is filled with violence, debates, poverty, cheating, and deception, so, once in a while, it’s important to be shown the beautiful in life. OCNSIDE’s “Taking Me Over” gives us an innovative perspective on love in 2018- sweet and sappy in the best possible way.
