This is the type of song you’d probably want to hear – assuming you woke up in a good mood – first thing in the morning as you get up out of bed.

That may not have been the initial intention with the appropriately titled “Get Up” by San Fernando Ramblers, but what the heck, it works. Empowerment and confidence are the foreground themes to this foot-stomping, hand-clapping slice of Americana pop. The melody is minimalist and catchy with vocals whose reverbed sustain creates an atmosphere that transports you right there with them as the band performs live.

It’s a sound that creates a wide-open space, as if the words are being shouted to the masses and beckoning the crowd to sing along with the anthemic chorus.

I’m comin at you with a heart of gold
That precious glow is on me
I’m comin at you like a desert rose
They broke the mold with me.

Right out the gate, the message here is one of positive self-awareness. I’m not willing to compromise or let you bring me down because I know I’m worth more than that. I’m ready to go out and take on the world, and in doing so, maybe brighten things up a bit while I’m at it – so don’t even think about trying to stop me. As life has its ups and downs, these thoughts may not come so easily to us if we’re in a rut, but it’s always true that no matter what, you have to eventually get up and show the world the greatness you have to offer. It’s something we probably all could use being reminded of every so often.

The song does a great job of implanting its earworm of optimism into the listener, particularly during the gang vocal chorus. It’s a message whose simplicity and folksy quality lends itself well to the overall tone. Bottom line is, no excuses. Whatever you may think is keeping you down, you have to find a way to overcome it, get back up on your feet, and work toward achieving that next goal.

I’m bout to break another milestone/The fight is growing in me.

Why settle for just reaching one goal when you can continue to move on and conquer the next one. As long as we’re still living and breathing, there should always be some fight left within us to keep working toward improving ourselves and hopefully the world around us as well. Some days the message could apply to something as simple as running that extra mile on the treadmill. See? I told you it’s perfect for waking up to. Those 5 AM workouts can be rough. Am I right?

For those who could use a little morning or mid-day pick-me-up, “Get Up” should fit snuggly into your commute rotation or workout playlist as a simple reminder that we all have something amazing to offer the world – so never settle, and always strive toward doing your best.
